The Walking Dead: 5 theories to explain the mysterious helicopter sighting in season 8
Warning: Contains spoilers for The Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead returned with arguably its best episode of the season in The Big Scary U, but there was a strange sighting which has left many viewers baffled. Amid Negan’s ‘confessional’ time with Gabriel and the power tussle at the Saviors, a helicopter soared over Rick’s head during an incredibly random scene – which seemed to make an emphasized point of the sighting. What could this mean? Is the show teasing a pilot villain? Maybe Rick’s lust for revenge is making him dream of airborne reinforcements? Here’s some of the potential answers. Will this connect to the Fear The Walking Dead crossover?
Robert Kirkman recently revealed how a crossover episode is currently in the works, so could this be planting the seeds for an appearance from one of the spin-off’s characters? There’s been government groups seen on Fear The Walking Dead, and with main character Madison being related to someone in the mainline show, could this be a helicopter search for her relative? Could this be one of Negan’s new tools?
Some believe the helicopter is merely showing one of Negan’s secret weapons, with a small dialogue exchange with Simon potentially teasing their new vehicle. While discussing keeping Hilltop under control, Simon referred to taking ‘a flyer on the place and kill everyone there’. While it seems bizarre we haven’t seen or heard about this chopper until now, could this be a Saviors secret which could cause devastating harm to Rick’s gang?
Is a new villain coming into the fray?
In a recent issue of The Walking Dead comics, a new well-armed and militaristic group have slowly come into the fold called The Commonwealth. They appear after Rick sends a scouting party consisting of Michonne, Eugene, Siddiq, Magna, Yumiko and newcomer Princess to meet with a new community Eugene had made contact with, who turn out to be the white body-armoured soldiers.
While details are sparse on the group’s history, they seem to be the only group in The Walking Dead canon capable of possessing an operational helicopter – so could they be set for an early arrival way before they’re expected? We’ve not even had the Whisperers yet..
Is Rick just hallucinating?
We’ve already seen flash-forwards of Rick seemingly in red-eye panic, could this be another sign of a potential failing mental state? This idea certainly seems questionable considering Rick seems more focussed and clear-headed this season, but we’ll entertain the idea. Barely.
Could this simply be a throwaway easter egg to past seasons? Rick’s previously been distracted via helicopter in a key moment from the pilot episode. So a mere acknowledgement of the journey since the first episode? If so, it was a pretty big failure by all accounts, but we wouldn’t put it past the relatively dismal quality of the current season. The Walking Dead season 8 continues on AMC in the US Sundays, and airs in the UK on Mondays on Fox at 9pm.
